LiveBetter’s Karanda House in Broken Hill is an NDIS Short-Term Accommodation (STA) facility that offers people living with disability the opportunity to have some time away from their usual home environment while giving their carers a well-earned break.
We recently caught up with Andrew Pelizzer, whose son, Jack lives with a rare neurodevelopmental syndrome called Okur-Chung Neurodevelopmental Syndrome (OCNDS).
Jack has been a regular guest at Karanda House for nearly five years and we wanted to know why Andrew, and his wife Melanie, felt Karanda House was the right fit for Jack’s short-term accommodation needs.
“Jack has profound physical and intellectual disabilities, which means he has very high needs, said Andrew.
“It’s important that we know that Jack is being cared for by well-trained staff who are capable of providing the high-level care he needs – and we’ve certainly found that at Karanda House.”
At LiveBetter’s Karanda House, there are no stairs or carpets, the surfaces are flat and easily accessible, and both the main bathroom and one of the bedrooms are equipped with ceiling hoists.
According to Andrew, Jack looks forward to his stays at Karanda House, and especially loves the Arjo bath (an accessible bathtub), as he only has access to a shower at home.
“It’s a fantastic facility! The house is well equipped and can accommodate Jack’s physical needs – and he has great relationships with the staff – he really enjoys the way they engage with him.”
LiveBetter’s Short-term accommodation property in Broken Hill provides a vital service for both carers and people living with disability.
For carers, it provides the opportunity for a much-needed break, allowing them to rest and recharge, and ultimately prevent burnout.
For individuals like Jack, it is an opportunity to experience independence from their families and carers, enjoy different activities and make new friends.
For Andrew and Melanie, they not only see their decision to use Karanda House as an opportunity for respite but as an important step on Jack’s journey towards his future, with Supported Independent Living (SIL) as a long-term aspiration.
