Recently a group of LiveBetter customers travelled to Coffs Harbour for an accessible holiday adventure at McCabe Coffs Retreat, LiveBetter’s latest accessible service offering which is located in one of the most perfect regions of NSW.
McCabe Coffs Retreat has an interesting history. Named after Allan McCabe and known locally as the ‘House that Coffs Built,’ the house serves as a wonderful legacy to Allan and Julie McCabe, well known Coffs Harbour locals. When, some years ago, Allan McCabe suffered a sporting accident leaving him a quadriplegic, the whole Coffs Harbour community, over 900 people, came together to build this completely accessible home for Allan and his family to live in. Local electricians, brickies, carpenters, interior designers, and retailers all volunteered their services, and the results are a testament to what the community can achieve when they work together for a common cause.
After Allan’s passing, the McCabe family decided it was time to move on, and LiveBetter now ensures that McCabe Coffs Retreat remains a place where families living with disability can feel at home, rest, relax and rejuvenate in a supported environment.
The boys arrived at McCabe’s Coffs Retreat ready to take advantage of the amazing Coffs Harbour location. Their sunshine-soaked week was punctuated with walks along the beach collecting seashells, relaxing by the pool, and enjoying delicious BBQs in the alfresco dining area.
Naturally, they couldn’t visit the home of the Big Banana without seeing it up close – and purchasing a few Big Banana souvenirs to serve as reminders of their time on the coast.
The stay at McCabe’s’ Coffs Retreat was a huge success. “It was a terrific holiday spot for the boys,” said LiveBetter staff member, Noel Trudgett. “The house is so well set up, and in such a great location. It’s a great place for people living with disability and their families to go to relax, knowing that it’s safe and accessible for everyone.”
After a week enjoying all that Coffs Harbour had to offer, the boys set off on their homeward journey. The drive was a long one, and they finally arrived home weary from the day long drive, but feeling relaxed and reenergised, thrilled they’d had such a fabulous holiday, and wondering when they’d return to Coffs harbour to holiday at McCabe’s Coffs Retreat again.
