Popular supports for carers

Help and advice

We can take the stress out of trying to understand different systems that may seem confusing and overwhelming. We'll help you navigate systems and find information to get the right support.

Respite

As a carer, you probably put your own needs last. But taking time out for yourself is really important. We'll find ways to look after the person you care for, so you can have a break to look after yourself and recharge. Respite care can be for a short time (like a few hours each week) or for longer periods, including overnight.

Carer Support Groups

Caring can sometimes be isolating and connecting with other carers who understand can make a big difference. Carer Support Groups are an opportunity to share stories, advice and learn from each other in a safe space. Depending on what suits you, there are face-to-face and online opportunities.

Carer Coaching Services

Support to reflect on how things are going, how you’d like things to be, and steps to get there. You can meet with a trained carer coach to explore areas of your life where you’d like things to change, or you can access online self-guided coaching sessions via the Carer Gateway website.

Counselling

If you’re feeling stressed, anxious, sad, or frustrated, a professional counsellor can talk to you about your worries and offer help. Carer Gateway offers in person and phone counselling services. By answering a couple of questions when you call, we can also provide information on services that best suit your needs.

Emergency Respite

If you become sick or injured and can’t continue to care for your loved one, Carer Gateway may be able to organise emergency respite services to take over while you recover. Call Carer Gateway to discuss your options and arrange emergency respite care.

Are you one of Australia’s 235,000 young carers?
